When it comes to web page design, a very recent study* found that "cool" loses out to "purpose" and the old saying about design holds true, "form follows function."

For example users were asked to search sites for to specific questions and to evaluate how easy they found the sites to use. The following was concluded:

  1. Text links are of more use to users than graphic links, and the longer the text link the better. Category links don't work; descriptive ones do.
  2. Site searches lowered people's ability to find the information they were looking for.
  3. White space doesn't help a site. In fact, successful users found more information in long, text pages than in pages with a lot of white space. Long pages worked fine as well.


*Study conducted by User Interface Engineering. Studied several sites including Disney, CNET, Edmunds and Travelocity to see what impact graphics, design, links and content had on information retrieval by users.
